Driving days down highway I-80
world weary, vision bleary
fate brought us this far
a motel parking lot
where we slept in our
cramped, uncomfortable car
almost dreaming
ahead, a new life gleaming
morning light came streaming
in through the window
where we were; I didn't know
outside all around us
we were surrounded
the softest velvet of green
the smoothest I have ever seen
a coveted blanket for a bed
when someone said:
"It's the Salinas Valley."
years past, but still seems
perfect though those hills of green
maybe just part of a verdant dream
