Like sardines packed into the small, dimly lit lobby
Crowd surged, sea of faces, swell of voices
Folksongs sung in tongue unfamiliar, tonality mystical
To accordian playing gypsy magic tunes by faint candle
Little did I realise the significance, the fleeting falsehood
Culture was breathing her last breath, serenade to the insensitive
Musical death, notes cascading onto long deafened ears
A given chance to open eyes, treated with contempt
Culture has died, did anyone other notice, mourn her passing ?
This gathering, perceived as the resurgent sweet breath of life
Reeks foulest odour, the epidemic of poison
The lifeforce of culture, trickled out through open veins
The tide turned to the restaurant, poured through the open doors like sand grains
Outnumbered now by those that played on to the emptiness and calm, we listened
Through the glass we watched them gorge themselves beyond their fill
Two mouths open in wonder at music, 100 mouths open in wonder at the salad bar
Perhaps the ghost of culture will one day pass this way again
Float by the remains of meal at the table where you once sat
Spare a thought if you can, just a second that is all
For the death of a lady you helped to die

well written and truly a sad part of this world...I am of many nationalities and have very few traditions...to me the music, dances, costumes and customs of all are important and interesting...I guess people no longer value what they have until it is gone
