…in the jungle of our days

Bones lie, unchanged, rotting away
The reminder of some former life.
Each grain falls in the hourglass
Like a continuous, heavy pendulum swinging
Back and forth through the time
We still have left.
We are guided through past memories
And those who did not make it. Many
Fell, but we still have some time to
Stamp out the fires we made
To leave no trace of wrong.
Lend a heavy, iron hand to those in need,
Hoping that someone, someday will
Do the same when our grains stop falling.
Keep going, through the unmapped
Forests of the future to the dark caves.
Forever asking, did He want us
To travel this way?
Fight off treacherous serpents
Anyway we can, not to become
A serpent ourselves. Ignore the voices
Telling us to retreat. But continue to finish our
Journey. We then look back to think,
Could we have done any better?
Our bodies of porcelain skin and iron bones,
Will soon, break and fall.
Yet we know, we can go on
With one more chance.
Our fragile, glass hearts remain strong
To keep on the fight, and will not crack.
Our guide remains, a distant
But warm light lending us hope.
Pendulums swing back and forth.
We stop. But we carry on stronger,
Forever fighting serpents, forever stamping out fires
…in the jungle of our days.

Welcome to YPDC, benchiou!
This terrific first posts leaves me thinking that I'll need to keep an eye on your page! There are some wonderful lines here that resonate ("Ignore the voices telling us to retreat" hit home for me, for instance). There is, as well, something here that is decidedly your own - which is essential in good poetry, I think. OH and... I love the title!
Nicely done!
