Surprise
Life is at your door
Pounding its relenting fists on your heart
Digging its painstaking nails in your brain
Letting you wonder and think
How you once
Laughed so hard you cried
How you now
Cry so hard you laugh
How you never
Felt alone
Now,
Alone is all you feel
Surprise
Life is at your fingertips
Holding an empty pill bottle
Swallowing away your tears
How you once, how you now
How you never, now you always
Cry yourself to sleep.
Surprise.

Heartbreak we have all known is well expressed here. Nice work in creating a tension between past and present. I like the way your inverted some of the lines:
"Laughed so hard you cried
How you now
Cry so hard you laugh
How you never
Felt alone
Now,
Alone is all you feel"

I echo ButchHoward's comments. A very solid write. Hoping and praying that the pain will swiftle leave.
