Silence So Sweet

The night’s finally over
The screaming is out of your blood
But the words are still ringing in my head
I always thought that the sleep would release me
From all the wounds you give to me
I never thought your words would hurt so much
And as I sleep it all sinks in
Morning comes and there’s blood on the floor
I follow the trail into the bathroom
And in morbid disgust there you lay
Bloody and mutilated as if attacked by wild dogs
For some reason I am not crying
I loved you so much, but still I shed no tears
I leave the room and see if someone had broken in
Everything was in tact and so very quiet
I sit on the couch and try to remember last night
Suddenly I realize that I got up at midnight
You were in the bathroom washing your face
I had a knife and was poised to strike at any time
You started yelling and I attacked
Over and over I cut at you to stop the yelling
It finally stops and I get up to leave
I lie back in bed and fall to sleep
I sleep like a baby
Thanks to the sweet silence

...ouch...that was a powerful one...strong emotions...pain...tragedy...it raced in the places where it should race, and trudged where it should trudge...
...now, in ten thousand words or less...what I've learned...emotions are lilke the red and green lights on a sophisticated dashboard...green means everything is okay...red means mayday, mayday, mayday...but, contrary to how almost everyone responds to red light emotions of anger, fear, hate, insecurity, the problem is interior...Attachment Theory explains the process by which our caregivers from our very earliest years have molded our perception of the world we will live in and ourselves...that perception and that self-image controls how we will react to the experiences life throws at us...if a caregiver had a pattern of behavior that diminished your significance, behavior that you felt angry about but as a child was incapable of safely expressing that anger, your emotional development was frozen at that stage...children get angry...True Adults do not get angry, they respond with care and understanding, seeking healing and wholeness...they don't attack...
...there's more, but you're probably scratching your head already...there are reasons for everyone's behavior...finding those reasons can be a freeing discovery...
...stay cool,
ron...enigma |
