My memories are in black and white, of a day when we were boys, as we walked to the field (remember its name?)
You, with your over sized radio playing classic rock, though at the time it was hardly classic, but a new release. Me with a handful of stones - tossing them, haphazardly.
As we walked - listening, talking, dreaming - the field slowly approaching, seeming like miles away, but merely blocks...we were free; of school, parents, bullies. We walked tall, as if we had purpose. We talked about something...the snake we'd find perhaps, or of what we'd be when we grow up.
At the field we walked...not knowing exactly what to do...yet we walked. I was proud to be there...you and I. That day the field was ours. We had not much to say but we knew, this was a special day. Roaming around the field, gazing upon it as if it were our Empire.
It seemed like an eternity, though probably less than an hour. But that was an hour that we reigned over that field.
Soon, though, we knew it was time to go...probably due to the hunger pangs. So down the path we trekked, our faces dirty with sweat and dust. At the gate I gazed back and smiled - knowing that the field was ours, if but for a day.
Who knew that we'd soon be men, and together we'd trek upon tropic shores or sail the Atlantic (on a daily basis), or write of our boyhood days...and that a simple day, as we walked, a day that the field was ours...would leave such a mark.

What an absolutely lovely poem!! I have the feeling that you're talking about a time spent with a brother or close friend perhaps...
Thank you for sharing this....

I'm honored Bro-
not only for the time we spent that day
and for this.. these words that will be with me
forever, but also in knowing that you will part of me
for just as long.
We sure have come a long way haven't we,
from that simple day in the field..(Columbia..lol) both now with families of our own.. living lives
that back then, seemed so unattainable...
I love ya Paul-
Thanks for this trip down memory lane..
You will always have my highest respect, gratitude
and thanks for this...your words, and for everything else you do..
Love,
Billy |

This is such a beautiful and thought out decication to someone who means alot to you........and that someone.. YOU could never replace, no matter.! Brothers..................arent they worth having? Even if they did and still do give you a hard time...LOL

Paul,
I am moved beyond a response, I think. This piece, so eloquent and yet so very simple a
thought, has brought a tear to my eye. Not just for the reminiscence that you have
conveyed here, but for the reminder of my own glorious, king-of-the-hill days with my
sweet sister. She and I were much like you and Billy. How wonderful to be able to look
back on childhood with at least, even a teeny bit of happiness. The joy and wonderment
that a close tie with your sibling brings, is worth it's weight in gold. [and then some].
I agree with Dayna. You and Billy are very lucky to have each other. And to witness the
bond that you two share is, well, it's just beautiful . . . as is this piece.
Wonderful write, Paul. Simply stunning.
*hugs*
