anguished

I had a dream one day.
In that dream I saw my lost love,
Who had died only three seasons past.
Drawn together as two opposite forces by unseen bonds.
She stood there, quiet, staring - and difficult to see.
Those soul-mirroring eyes, reflection empty,
Shining, instead, the absolute cold of death.
Absolute eyes framed by ethereal form unformed.
I felt very heavy at that moment...
As though the weight of my burdens
Were demons, dragging my still living soul
Deep, deep down,
But, my soul, being of the living,
While stricken by sadness and evils, and demon-borne,
Could not pass that barrier into Hell, just yet,
The torture of it all just the same as though it did.
Saying no words, we stared,
I, hesitant to begin,
Hunting for phrase, as one for a deer,
Cautiously to find a start.
As though lightning from cloud to cloud,
Two minds suddenly open to each other,
Intentions baring...
Shared thoughts of daring.
Images flooded my mind,
Her, the wedding, years, sadness, depression.
Her retreat into herself,
Diminishing sanity.
And then myself
Above her, a cast aside husk,
Host to parasitic dementia.
And her death... at my hands.
This wrought apparition before me,
This scornful imposition,
Audacious to share presence after
Mortal actions found mortal endings.
Before me this distorted simulacrum,
This appaling, viscious doppelganger comes,
Whose eyes bury their stare not in mine,
But my deepest corner of spirit,
Judging me for passed time -
The days when I wished I could do more,
But knew no more could be done.
In her end, anguish crushed my soul.
"You foul temptress from beyond!
Evil and spiteful whore of the dead!
Do not seek vengeance for your death - Begone
Your anger toward your savior!
I could do no more righteous for you!
You, suffering horrid mental defect,
Shamed and shaming in your state,
Writhing from such tormenting trait,
Victim to torturous thoughts forged from your lost mind.
Was your rescue not justified?
Yet here you are, flawed spirit,
O embodiment of revenge,
So wreck your havoc upon me! Singe
And destroy that which helped you -
Which gave you peace through destruction!"
I could do nothing more,
Standing upon this cold plane,
Thoughts laid bare for all Heaven
And Hell to see.
Her approach - slowly, a crawl,
As though a cat upon prey,
This once so honored woman,
Now inhuman revenant, perverse in existence,
Closer, until upon me,
Fetid stench invading my senses,
And appearance suddenly so clear:
Repulsive counterfeit of my lost love.
The floor rose to meet me,
And I, falling, forced down by the anguish of loss
And the perversion of the lost, dream even further,
A familiar scene, reversed though it is, becomes animated:
Her atop my prone body,
Hands to my throat,
Flash, spots both bright and dark
Permeate my sight.
I struggle against this grip,
Reinforced by the steely strength of death,
And look up to see my lost love.
As I to her, she is my end.
A face, twisted with rage. A sibilant hiss,
"This is my vengeance for your mercy -
The fee for your tainted benevolence.
Die..."
(Air! Please!)
My mind screaming, and my vocal chords,
Gushing obscenities...
And pleas.
"... Die..."
(Air!)
My folly, my life,
All of it a contemptible existence.
"... Die."
(Air...)
Mercy!
