All We Know to Do Is Cling

All We Know To Do Is Cling

All these moments,
tiny, little moments,
amongst the gentle tickling of moments
I sense this day's waning,
the soft, almost imperceptible flow of midnight's cool, cool breath;
You...
...my child and I cling in these ebbing moments,
we sing songs,
wondering,
or,
is it that we sing songs,
knowing,
somehow knowing...
...we sit criss-cross-applesauce on the kitchen floor,
amongst crumbs and little bitty spots of bacon grease,
playing show and tell,
duck, duck, goose,
wondering...
or,
do we sit on the cool ceramic tile,
knowing,
somehow knowing...
...we blend ourselves together and read of pigs and goats and big red dogs,
for the moment secure in the knowledge of each other's breath,
the rising and the falling,
the beating,
wondering,
wondering,
silently wondering...
or,
as a daughter and a father
do we read each moment as a priceless, sacred gift,
stopping every now and then to look deep into each other's laughing eyes,
seeking assurance of the other's presence,
wiggling and giggling,
grinning,
and knowing,
knowing,
somehow knowing...
...neither possessing the necessary resources,
she and I cling,
as midnight's cool breath turns cold;
You...
...we cling,
my child and I,
our hopes turned up against the ensuing warmth devouring darkness;
You...
...all we know to do
is cling...

...yet,
even still,
moments spewing as pearls into the briny deep;
You...
You stand as marble,
silhouetted silent and frigid
against the dark, dark, darkness of our despair,
key dangling about your neck;
You...
...still,
we cling...
all we know to do is cling,
and so we cling,
we cling,
we cling...
...in the frigid darkness,
we seek each other's presence,
and cling...
we cling,
and wait.

I enjoyed it, it left me feeling an uneasy comfort by the end...I found it very relatable.
