Grief

Many have died and more are to come,
and the reason we fight, I do not know.
Our general's a real bum,
And mice just keep on biting my toe;
But they say it must be done,
and even if it's not fun,
we must continue to Fight Fight Fight
We could use a loaf or two
but that's what the mice nibble & chew.
They leave us nothing in return
but that's the least of our concern
cause we just have to Fight Fight Fight.
The artillery just won't stop firing
and bodies are hanging from the barbed wiring.
My clothes are clinging to my skin.
I'm so thirsty, I'd even drink gin.
Despite all my problems we must still Fight Fight Fight.
"Are our 2,000 lives worth just a foot?",
I think to myselft as our commander tells us to stay put.
And then he yells the charge command
while the bunker & he, so close at hand.
For what has he, to fear, that man?
Nothing, I believe because he didn't charge
and down go we as suddenly as it began
as we hear the machine guns discharge.
That is my life, probably how it will end,
just because of this Fight Fight Fight.
