Giant in the Yard

Contributed by deadheadpoet on Sunday, 22nd January 2006 @ 12:07:47 AM in AEST
Topic: NaturePoetry

I wake in the mornings
so glad to see you there.
First thing, right out my bedroom window,
waving to me...my friend.
Every morning. Every day.
I watch you move
and gently sway.
This and that
way.....depending on
how the wind is blowing.
Sometimes it looks as though
all your branches
are dancing
some rhythmic mesmerizing waltz.
(Ballroom in the front yard, so it would seem)
I watch the birds,
wrens and starlings mostly,
jump from one
limb to another.
Squirrels too
find a home in you.
They use your branches
to gain access to my roof
their little pitter-pattering feet,
so plain to hear
early in the morning
when all are fast asleep.
My big old maple tree,
probably close to a century old.
Take four men to hug you .....
at least.
Played on you as a child,
growing up.
Find peace in just watching you
now that I've grown older.
I'm amazed by your enormity
Never have I laid my brown orbs on
a silver maple quite your size.
Such a sweet pleasure for these
hardened eyes.

Penned January 2006
Laura Horner

I must admit I'm a self confessed tree hugger!
I remember a few years ago I was out walking with a friend of mine.
We were right in the middle of nowhere ,
and in the middle of a field was a huge oak .

We sat down about a 100 yards from it and got stoned.
What was so fascinating about it was a supermarket carrier bag
caught in the branches and just fluttering in the breeze.
We sat there totally mesmerised for ages,
trying to work out where it had come from! lol! God I do miss those days!

over 20 years ago a seedling sprouted up in our yard. We decided to let it grow. We now have a very large maple and it gives wonderful shade...

Beautiful poem, Laura. I too am a tree lover. It appears this tree served as quite a muse for you...something to day dream about and to contemplate. Perhaps the granduer and stability of the tree could help stabalize your anxiety.....put it into perspective perhaps.

Peace, my friend

Will

Enjoyed this poem immensely.I loved the way you described his size as taking at least for men to hug him.In my mind they are huge guys too.I had such a tree once,as a boy,a black poplar, stood proud ,king of our local wood.It was home to many birds over the years, owls, jackdaws, starlings, wrens and countless other passing visitors. We used to compete to see who could climb the highest,I'm sure he just laughed at our futile attempts to conquer him,he was always wiser.Sadly where he once stood, there is now a housing estate,it was like losing an old friend.
Sorry if I ramble on,I don't normally but you just brought back such wonderful memories.Thank you for your poem,

Den
