The Evangelist

Topic: ChristianPoetry

The summer’s heat intensified
The tent filled beyond capacity
Lost souls looking to be found
Looking for answers, cures and salvation
On the stage he walks, an ego stride
Dressed in white looking pure
Backstage his assistant still feeling his pawing hands
His attempt to free her from temptations
His voice begins as a distant thunder
His breath with remnants of the 60 proof
(Of course for medicinal purposes only)
He begins with almost a whisper
Drawing the crowd complete attention
His voice slowly builds
He begins his fire and brimstone
Speaks of God’s wrath for all Earth’s evil
Screams of the need for a love for Jesus
“Accept him into your life”
Our only salvation he decries
He hold God’s words proudly in his hand,
High above his head as he rants
To save all our souls from damnation
We are all lost souls in need of salvation
Come to him he cries “find Christ through me”
The crowd moves as one
Mesmerized, hypnotized, crying “Amen”
Puppets on a string manipulated by his words
The plates are past filled blindly
By those who can ill afford
An attempt to buy their “Stairway to Heaven”
Lining the pockets, fulfilling the greed of one
From the crowd he pulls the afflicted
The laying of the hands, “Heal”, he cries “Heal”
A cripple rises from his chair
One without sight cries as he sees the light
Another long ago deaf cries as she hears the angels voices
A small child one who’s lovely hair has been lost
Lost to the mortal man’s attempt to heal
She is overlooked, ignored
For he knows those truly afflicted
He cannot heal, stealing his thunder
The truth is hidden behind the eye’s
It is the mouth that tells the lies

Can I hear an …

Yeah I'll amen that...good peice of writing. Reminds me of the sickos like Jimmy Swaggert, Jim Baker and the best of all (drum roll please) Pat Robertson. These are the so called Christians that make me sick. Greedy men. Thanks for sharing. Peace, Laura

I agree that some evangelist's misuse there position because of greed, but I felt the poem was a bit too generalistic. My father is an evangelist who goes around in tents fillied to capacity, but I know money is the last thing on his mind. He is very humble and lives equally humbly and whatever money he gets goes back into the ministry. Great poem anyway.
