A Little About Where I Live(Australia)

Contributed by LovingWhispers on Sunday, 26th January 2003 @ 09:20:00 AM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

If you care to come and sit with me awhile on my back verandah....in the moments just before daybreak, you will be welcomed by the sound of all the birds that call this mountain home.Majestic magpies call from the treetops and greet their own with their good morning song.Kookaburras swoop and land on the railing of my verandah awaiting their breakfast and their merry laugh can be heard for miles around.

Echoing through the valley and breaking the silence with beauty are the lorikeets.Brightly coloured feathers against the purple/orange morning sky, is truly a magical vision.

As the day grows lighter still, your eyes will be dazzled by the dewdrops that glisten on the lush ferny growth that covers the earth on either side of the mountain path.Within this growth you will hear the rustling of the brush turkeys scratching about for their early feed.So timid in nature and their quietness as I watch them, brings a peaceful feeling.Mornings here are very alive with activity, but soothing in its soft unassuming way.

The deep blue water in the distance sparkles as though she carries diamonds on her tides. An ever watchful pelican can often be seen hovering above, eyeing the waters surface....and in a swift dive, retrieving breakfast.
People on boats come to life and go about their daily routine of.....relaxing.....yes.....even rising to go to work has its benefits here...being able to witness the birth of a new day on the water......being lulled by the tide....and reading the morning paper over breakfast, listening to the seagulls.....watching as they circle the waters surface.
Sort of makes it hard I suppose to even go into work.

There is little traffic where I am here tucked neatly and secretly away from the hustle bustle of cars and shops. The roadsides have no pathways and sand is ever present under your feet. You can walk in moments, to the beach from my front door.....Beautiful warm golden sands....and waves that crash along the shoreline in the formation of a string of pearls. Her shells are abundant and the caves near the dunes provide shelter or even just a new adventure for kids.
Seagulls and pelicans.Crabs and pippies.Fishermen and people just out walking all adorn this stretch of magnificent gold carpet.
Then there are the clifftops....standing strong against the blue backdrop. So serene in daylight....almost like a wise old man sitting in his favourite chair...asleep.But come dusk ...everything changes on the beach.

Night time welcomes the winds and they howl across the wise old man.....whistling eerie tunes through the caves.(i love it :)
Darkness covers the gold and waves seem to crash louder upon the shore. The sands are cooler....damp.The caves are only there if you know they are.If you look out across the sea.....your eyes will fall upon the beauty of glimmering lights in the homes on an island hillside.

Nights sky.......a splendour.Billions of tiny stars blanket the dark universe and their light....glow...shimmers on the waters surface.
Sometimes I sit on this beach in the darkness with the wind whistling and the cooling sands beneath me watching the might ,the awesomeness of a storm.Lightning flashing across the sky out over the ocean.......rain pouring down........I can hear the drops on the water and it brings a certain ease.

Or sometimes I wander down the Esplanade....

Restaurants with live music, movies, sidewalk entertainment and lots of laughter. There is Italian,Thai,Indian,Chinese and Mexican food......and each restaurant has outside tables so that in summer you can enjoy the cool breeze that blows in from the ocean. In summer the streets are full of people...out walking or on their way to a beach party.....The occasional busker will be found outside the movie theatre......and it is usually myself lol....who is tossing coins..
In winter....there is a certain cosiness even though the sidewalk entertainment has moved inside and the breeze from the ocean is chilly. There is still the warmth of laughter...friends and families enjoying a meal and moments which will become their memories.

Springtime is an abundance of breathtaking scents and colours...

Gardens are filled with glorious flowers of all types. The garden beds look more like rainbows.Sunflowers stand tall against backyard fences.Jacaranda trees line the streets and carpet the ground with their gorgeous mauve petals.

The perfume from the frangipani trees waft along the streets, filling the warm air with a fragrance that follows you.

And here on this mountain....my home, under a canopy of lush green in the spring ,I dream.....

Come dream with me.....
