Remember Him in a Teddy

She lies on her bed
Clutching the teddy bear he gave her.
She stares at the ceiling
And she thinks about the past.
The nights they spent together under the stars
And the many walks holding hands.
The countless movies
And endless milkshakes.
She fingers the ring he gave her.
“He only moved this summer...”
“He might be coming back…”
The letters have ceased
And the phone calls have lessened.
She wishes to be in his arms
And watch the clouds shift shapes.
A tear leaks from her eye
And she uses the sleeve of his sweatshirt to wipe it away.
“No crying…”She promised herself.
She grips the Teddy tighter
And buries her nose into its neck.
She remembers a voice, the new guy in her life.
“You must let go, don’t forget, just let go.”
She slips off the ring
“Forever…” he said
Puts it back in its box
“I’ll always be here…”
And puts it away.
“Remember me…”
This girl is me
And here I say
This is me letting go.
And although I’ll always love you
It’s time to set you free.
