By the Blood of the Innocents
He dealt in blood,
life's blood,
the lifeblood of the innocents...
and he was good at it...
my...
my, my, my,
was he good at it...
...but,
like an aged and doting godfather,
mellowed by the laughter of his children's children,
tenderized by the insatiable appetite of those carnivorous attachment years,
tenderized by a wisdom so, so late in coming,
a wisdom embodied in the softness of all those innocent, believing eyes,
a precious softness he was unable to detect amidst the struggles of his tumultuous youth...
this accumulation of wrinkled skin,
this benevolent demon,
weary of the stench,
and worn to his marrow,
shakes his head,
draws his last breath,
and walks away,
redeemed...
finally redeemed...
by the blood of the innocents,
redeemed...

...this one is a second cousin to the poems, "His Heart Has Ears" and "Hey, Old Man..."...for about seven of my thirty-three years teaching, I was a developmental educator...this philosophy of education focuses on the whole child and not just the academic portion...with Bush and his followers in charge, only the academic is given priority...capitalism doesn't have much regard for anything that doesn't produce immediate profit...my district has turned its back on developmental education for the more economically lucrative traditional "veal-farm" educational concept...the kids that fit in the box are fortunate...those whose arms, legs, fingers, toes, or heaven forbid their heads are hanging outside the box when the lid is shut simply get them cut off...get the picture...though I did my best to be sensitive, my sensitivity let my arms and legs, fingers and toes hang outside the box, too...I got chewed up, but I kept coming back for the thirty pieces of silver I needed to support my family...could say more, but won't...

yeah, I had my ears cut off...stupid boxes...
Ignore the boxes!! I assume thirty pieces is thirty thousand...isn't that what teachers make, roundabout?
Anyway, I liked the poem. Looking at it from several, if not all, sides, I can see the thing about Bush and what not. Education has become a religion of sorts, or so i figure from what I see...the church of academia^_^
I am undeducated, so I'm pretty much a waste of space in some eyes...but hey, undeducate yourself to educate yourself...so sayest mr. henry david thoreau^_^ anyway, I liked. goodbye ^_^
