An Aussie Merry Christmas

Contributed by OzChick on Tuesday, 20th December 2005 @ 10:38:30 PM in AEST
Topic: Holiday Poetry

Christmas comes but once a year.
Once again that time is here.
People decorate their homes.
Draping tinsel over gnomes.
An Aussie Christmas is quite unique.
Though not traditional, too much heat!
A barbecue in stead of a turkey.
Don’t mind us, we know we’re quirky.
Prawns are our mandatory fare.
A fruit covered Pavlova is usually there.
Flies are always uninvited guests.
In summer we Aussies can’t avoid those pests.
We don’t drink Eggnog, for us it’s beer.
That’s an Aussie tradition that many hold dear.
And reindeer don’t pull Santa’s sleigh.
Six white boomers lead the way.
A white Christmas is unheard of here.
None the less we’re full of Christmas cheer.
Remembering what it’s all about.
With Midnight Mass for the truly devout.
Placing a gift under a Wishing Tree,
Hoping that gift will make a child happy.
Gatherings with the family on Christmas Day.
Having fun with the kids with their new toys as they play.
Yes, Christmas in Australia can be a real treat.
And this OzChick wishes you all a Christmas that’s sweet.
Where ever you are in this world that’s so small,
A big Aussie Merry Christmas to one and to all!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little background information;
A Pavlova is a meringue desert cake created in Australia to honour a visiting Russian ballerina,
and of course it was named after her.
A 'boomer' is a large male kangaroo. 'Six White Boomers' is an Australian Christmas carol written by Rolfe Harris and John D Brown
Wishing Trees can be found in all major shopping centers and the idea is to buy a gift and label it for a boy or a girl of what ever age. These gifts go to homeless and underprivileged kids around Australia.
~~~~~Merry Christmas~~~~~

All so familiar - you have to be Australian not only to get this but feel it, deep down in your sense of self.

Sorry I missed it last Chrissy. Post it again this year. There should be a title for recurring poetry!
