Look! Daddy's Here
…he steps through the door;
grandma,
a woman,
another women,
standing and half-sitting on the arm of a couch...
a cousin stands distant,
and a little girl's eyes light up,
she bounces,
radiating a child's delight...
"Daddy!
Daddy!
Look!
Daddy's here!
Daddy's here!
Daddy!
Daddy!"
the daddy bends,
engulfed in an unspoken heaviness,
he kisses the top of his darling daughter's head,
ruffles her hair with a staged nonchalance...
innocently unaware,
she skips away,
bubbling with joy;
an amazed, Daddy's here, kind of joy...
...the father gives grandma two pints of applesauce,
some hugs,
an apology,
and a kiss on top of her head...
...then,
once again,
the little girl enters,
eyes sparkling,
awkwardly bouncing,
her joy flooding the room...
"Look!
Daddy's here!
Daddy's here!
Look!
Daddy!
Look!
Daddy!"
Again,
the unspoken heaviness engulfs...
...while his daughter is still bouncing with joy,
he kneels before her,
this time he hugs her and kisses her cheek...
he stands,
eyes burning with moist emotion,
backs towards the door...
his daughter,
still not understanding,
continues bright eyed...
reaching behind himself,
he opens the door...
his last glimpse as it closes,
is a confused wide-eyed look,
and an awkwardly cocked head...
this he saw as he allowed his tears to spill unchecked,
down his cheeks,
through his beard,
some moistening his worn black loafers,
the rest burning a path through the cold, cold snow,
to the dead earth below...
