They Look Up To Us

Topic: Lifepoems

She looks up to me…
distilled innocence…
If she only knew,
I look up to her simple wisdom,
I am a student of her honesty,
and a disciple of her beauty.

She has no concept of who she is…
From her first heart beat,
her first sense of being,
her first blurry impressions while in the womb,
her very first breath…
From the first suck of her rose shaped lips
and delicately formed tongue,
life has swirled around her,
an angry sea of intimidation.

The stark voice of hunger screamed,
"You are dependent!"
The chilling voice of dampness whined,
"You are inadequate!"
The fearful voice of darkness in night's ebony stillness taunted,
"You are helpless!"
The colicky voice of pain tormented,
"You are powerless!"
The raspy voice of ignorance sneered,
"You are disgustingly self-centered!"
In chorus they declared you to be a little bundle of selfishness,
proof of the fallenness of man…

Your response to this caustic diatribe,
this scream of dependency,
this whine of inadequacy,
this taunting voice of helplessness,
this torment of powerlessness,
this sneer of vulnerability,
was a tender voice of wisdom,
a sincere wail of truth,
a song of beauty.

In your unpretentious purity,
you cried,
and in that cry you humbly declared,
yes, I am dependent,
yes, I am inadequate,
yes, I am helpless,
yes, I am powerless,
yes, I am vulnerable…
I need you.
Please help me.

Your mommy and I in our fumbly adult ways
honored your innocent request as best we could.
But, our best could never be enough.
Our ways,
twisted by years of exposure to this world's demons,
slowly sewed seeds of corruptibility in your fertile soul…
With our selfish response,
we taught selfishness.
With our angry example,
we taught anger.
With our obstinate ways,
we taught obstinance.
With our weariness,
we taught hopelessness.
In spite of our best efforts to sustain your innocence,
we slowly twisted you
into a semblance of ourselves…

So goes the story of every child,
and yet,
in all their innocence,
they look up to us.
