I saw it in the reflection
Of a broken bottle on the street
I heard it in a small child's tear
Falling into a massive puddle of oil
I felt it brush across the land
With the papers in the wind
I witnessed it shivering madly
In a filthy blackened snow pile
I've taken it in from the air above
Inside the smog filled billowy clouds
I've bathed with it a time or two
In the darkened waters of a brook
I've hated it, despised it
Cried for it and tried to hide it
What is the 'it' that pollutes the land
The scandal of the earth
It's you and me and him and her
The ignorance in our lives...

Despairingly true. I once heard the human race compared not with animals but with a virus. It spread and destroys and when all the resources are gone it spreads some more in search of new and unspoiled areas to destroy. Calling us "it" is a very intuitive observation. |

Sad and yet so true. I can't believe all the things that our political leaders believe is so important but not many express any importance in the environment. Sure we can improve healthcare, education and our communities...but really, what good will it do when we are all dead from pollution? I have been reading up a lot on what our governments let us consume....it's very sad. Anyways, sorry to ramble....great poem. Very intense. Thank you. |
