All for One, and One for All!

I’m of a loyal band, a singular caravan
Escorting our Protected both near and far
Endlessly faithful, deathly loyal to a man
Ceaselessly following a silent star.
Through a desert, our path now leads
Ringed by mountains, full of shifting sands
Impassive barriers who care not man’s deeds
To our cries, our whispers, pleas, or demands.
Unaffected are we, at being beset
Charged on all sides by cloaked unknowns
No quarter is given as we meet the threat
Struck from behind, I drop like a stone.
Disarmed and disorganized, disorientation swells
We arise from slumber captured, but not killed.
Assembling quickly, we explore our cells
One and all pacing, our hunger for vengeance left unfilled.
Rising from chains, we break our fetters
Searching, we discover our foes success enraptured
Unarmed and rowdy, we engage our betters
The roles soon reversed; once captors, now captured.
At this point now, the Escorts disagreed
The more bloodthirsty wished for more to bleed
Others like me, felt our Protected should first be freed
Undecided, we broke apart; our own interests to feed.
Some head deeper in, others begin to flee
Indecisive, I stand alone, watching the groups separate
I decide the Protected is most valuable to me
As I watch peripherally to see a new cluster aggregate
At the staircase to the great nexus we are caught
Between stone walls and a new marauding force
It seems another decisive battle must here be fought
We must stand together to make safe the Protected’s course.
Hark! From the deep shadows comes a champion
I behold our newest unaccounted-for agent
Armed with a whip tipped with a brilliant star
Who will prove to be this skirmish’s reagent.
We mark each other during the ensuing melee
And in an instant, towards their counterparts all aim.
My katars out, I watch my opponent carefully
I need the first strike, and know she knows the same.
Supple leather flicks out, a scratch drawn on my cheek
Another flash, another groove on my face
As she dances, she laughs, and begins to speak
It seems that in this duel, I will find no grace.
She laughs at my vain efforts to defend
She ridicules my clumsy movement
The number of slashes I bear are a growing trend
And only my fury shows any improvement.
I launch myself at her in a reckless tackle
And watch her surprise show in her eyes
Even grounded, she laughs like a jackal
I grip to her throat to bring her demise.
And yet my hands, encasing her throat, can’t close
Something inside keeps my muscles slack
Under me, her pose shows she knows…
That something seems to be holding me back.
But the one under me has no such hesitation
Out flies another star, while I drown in frustration
Through my ribs, the star finds its destination
For both of us, my death is our salvation.
Deceased, but still not yet gone
I follow the bloody trail of my slayer
As she navigates this river, a bloody swan
For the rest of my comrades, I leave a prayer.
And for my Protected, I have only hope
That my comrades can divert aggression enough
So that there is time enough to climb the slope
Our victory in her retreat; all else is a bluff.
Through the last Companion, this champion cleaves
Blood and gore, splattered everywhere are guts
And through the entry portal our Protected leaves
And at her departure, the heavy stone door shuts.
