I see you breathe in the crystal night air
to fill yourself with nothingness.
I am nimble and weak as I watch you
pace round about the lamplit street.
Do I even dare taper my window
from the glittering snow and cold?
Would I just leave you there to wonder how
I could not come to say good-bye?
Heavy footsteps outside my bedroom door
re-ignite the flames of my fear.
I tremble to a chair next to the fire
and read a book that's upside down.
The hours move along to bring the dawn
and I waken with the sun's rays.
The snow is trampled by people going
around the circle of the day.
I search the site for you, my Northern star,
but the Light Horsemen have embarked,
and I must wait for bulbs to bloom in May.
I close the drape for the darkness.
