Light Flickers.
Abstract shadows dance
across hardwood boards.
Sickly smell,
aching head.
Distorted images,
focus into view –
home again.
Now, sober
reconstructions form.
A mosaic of
memories.
Remember,
Vodka, Gin, Brandy –
a depressives binge.
But there’s more...
A fight breaks,
outside. Darkness. Then,
lights, screaming, gunshots.
Now silence.
Head spinning,
steal into the night,
ravaged, elated.
Running home.
Quick inside.
Hide the gun. Good! Now
go to sleep! Don’t wake
Do not wake!
But sleep fails -
and recollections,
of last night have come.
Now they cease.
Fear sets in.
Confused, frightened, scared!
It wasn’t me – no –
It was not!
Looking down,
a red jacket. No –
a blood-soaked jacket!
It can’t be!
But wait! There!
A sheen of metal,
of cold hard metal –
on the floor.
It is there!
Oh my god - it is
there! There on the floor!
It’s the gun.
Cold dread! Tears
streaming, heart beating,
fall into darkness.
I did it…
Hours pass.
Then sirens sound. Bright
lights flashing outside.
They have come.
Panic now!
What will I do? What?
Now, yelling outside.
What to do…
Then, I know!
There’s only one thing
for it…feel the cool
metal - smooth
against my
head. Fingers flicker
across the trigger –
must be strong.
A gunshot -
lights and voices fade.
Fall into darkness -
Then, silence!
