Children at Risk

Topic: dedicatedpoems

The fear is so thick he can hardly breathe.
Fighting to control his bowels
he’s also fighting for one more tomorrow.
He watches the man beside him as half his face explodes,
and he loses control and feels the wetness down his leg.
He’s hoping for victory so he may eat today.
He points the weapon and pulls the trigger –
thankful that he missed.

Taken in the dark of the night
from the safety of her secret home,
she wishes only for a bite of bread
to fill the emptiness inside her.
Disgusted with the acts she now must perform
with stinking, foul men,
survival becomes her driving force
as hope is long forgotten
and joy is a word she will never utter.

The world’s gone wrong, to put it back
these kids must be on the right track.
Exploited, abused, their bodies are sold
for sex and work or wars untold.

They may be orphans or castaways,
expendable to the one who pays.
The kids are for sale, their souls are not
but with their lives they’re sure to rot.

A soldier at twelve, a hooker by ten,
the time has come for this to end.
Unlike our kids, they cannot see
a life they want to grow up to be.

The pain they feel has dulled their eyes,
all promises are tricks or lies.
Where can they turn, who can they trust
when all their hope has turned to dust?

It’s time for us to all unite
and help these children in their plight.
It’s only right to help them grow
the love for life that we all know.

Wow, John this is what I've missed. Such an honest and heart felt write. It's so sad, children have to live like this, and so many do. Most people don't know - or ignore the fact that while we live our lives, and complain with the extreme amount we actually do have, there are kids out there, doing acts that you explained, for pretty much nothing. People try to play it off as if it's not happening but it is, and there's always an answer. Amazing write, great to have you back. Can't wait for more writes.

-Cassy
