Honeyed bread and lavender, await the end of day,
And laughter is abundant, for children are at play,
We run and dance in costume, under watchful eye,
Then skip or sit on rope swing, to see who can go high.
Then down to squatters cottage, to drink some strawberry tea,
And walk down past canalside, to the spot beneath the tree.
Where we'll sell you bags of lavender, only a penny a piece,
'The sweetest smelling fragrance, come and get it cheap'
The shoe shine boy would clean your shoes, a ha'penny a time,
And Frank would get the carriage, and take you for a ride,
Past the plasterer and blacksmith, and church where bells still chime,
Down toward the farm, where all the creatures hide.
Now we'll go down to the schoolhouse, for the lessons of the day,
Where crafts and numbers beckon, there is no time for play,
We'll learn to make up pegdolls, and fragrance pillows, too,
Give respect to the teacher, or she'll mark the 'dunce' on you.
Then we'll make up crowns for mayday, with flowers, all hand picked,
And dress up in our best clothes, Until we look perfect.
Then dance around the maypole, with ribbons in our hands,
You can vote who will be mayqueen, to rule over our play land.
I remember down at Blists Hill, weekends, and holidays,
I would go and play the street child, I would volunteer each day,
I miss the sound of friendship, the other children laugh,
My memories are at Blists Hill... Far back in the past.
[Authors note: Blists Hill is a Victorian Town/Open air museum near where I live. I used to volunteer there as a child in the holidays and on weekends. We would dress up in victorian clothes, and act in front of the tourists. It is one of the best things I have ever done, and I will always love it there. Phil xxx]

PhillyGirl!!!!!! Brilliant. As I was reading this, your excellent imagery just drew me in and I didn't want to stop but was interupted twice by things of the day. I'm saying, people!!!! Can't you see I am reading a more than excellent write here down a memory lane where PhilylGirl has taken us? Leave me alone until I'm done!
This was awesome, Phiily and I did get to read it all the way through, finally, uninterrupted!!! Your imagery is beyond belief! I thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you for sharing and I'm reading it again so I can go back on your beautiful trip once again. Memories captured in time with excellent style.
Really really impressed.
Thank you,
Tim

My dear Phil, you never fail to impress and entice the senses with your all-too-vivid masterpieces... Like a soft breeze of memories with the hint of lavender and joy... all in the past, yet revisited through imagination and reverie. Exquisite. I do love your way of painting pictures in my head, and the fact that your rhyme scheme isn't redundant or insufferable... That is what always leaves me wide-eyed and staring in awe, :-P. I'm not much for rhyming poems, but yours... gosh, I don't know, they just flow so effortlessly and with such elegance, that I can't help but love it. Thank you so much for sharing this intimate recollection with us, cheri. Always a pleasure reading and commenting your work, :D. All my love. Forever,
Your dear friend/fan,
~*Stephy*~ |

Well Philly, I told ya yesterday how this made me feel all nostalgic. I love poems of this genre.
There is something about remembering happy times that stirs the soul and causes a smile
to remain permanently etched. This write was beautifully emotive and wonderfully written
sweeite. Makes me want to visit not only the place, but the time as well.
Your writes never disappoint. : )

Sounds like a wondrous time, indeed. A vivid and engaging story-in-verse, and anyone could tell it means a lot to you, this memory.

Such a lovely past to remember, the lavendar calms me down, beautiful words, this poem renews the wonderful past that many of us recall, days of joy. Work comes before pleasure, and yet, the pleasure we all have time for. Bless you and this poem.

to be honest I thought this was poem was
kind of odd... I liked it and it was very well
written, but I still found it odd. The poem
sounds like it is set in the 1800's at least that
is what came to my mind. Interesting and
unique.

Philly this was beautiful. It truely is, it took us all in a magical ride into your past. And what a great pass it was.
P.S. YOu kept saying Lavendar is that Lavender? If it is then it'll make sense.

Awww Philly...that's wonderful that you were a part of something so neat as a child! It reminded me totally of this place we used to go to on school trips as children...Same idea, and we'd be fed a pioneer-type lunch too: )
Your attention to detail here is really good! Great visuals for the reader to eat up...well done!
