“The Facts of Life: A Poem for All Who Grieve”
For Nike and all who loved him:
Close your eyes
Wipe your tears
I know you are filled with many fears
But all is right
All is well
Just close your eyes and listen to my tale
Things may break
And things may fall
But someone loves you through it all
Life’s not fair
All good things must end
Wherever you go you will have someone to call your friend
Someone is always there
You are never alone
As long as I’m alive you will always have a place to call your home
All will be well
Although at times things might not be right
But together we will get you through all of your plights
People may die
And people may leave
But it’s okay little girl to let your heart grieve.
Life will continue
Things will move on
There is a time to feel weak and a time to be strong
Just close your eyes
Come on and shed all of your tears
I will do all in my power to drive away those fears
In Memory of Nike 10/23/95-4/26/05
Author’s Note: On April 26, 2005 my world ended, my little dog Nike was eaten by a coyote. This poem is a response to it. I wrote it for my little sister Kelley who believes that she must hold the weight of the world on her shoulders. I wanted to let her know that it’s okay to cry, it’s okay to love someone, and it’s okay to move on and live again. Most of all I wanted her to know that wherever she goes someone loves her. Please cherish all you have because in a single moment your world can end.
