The Train Trip

The kids are excited, we're going on a trip.
Chugging 'cross Australia on the Indian Pacific.
We're exiting the city of Perth, leaving it behind.
Looking for adventure, sure excitement we shall find.
The roof-tops give way to fields of wild-flowers.
Scenery speeds by, entrancing us for hours.
'Twill take two full days to reach our destination.
Even at speed, it takes time to cross this Nation.
Slowing down for country towns, nothing much to look at.
Speeding up again, clickety clackety clack.
Our first stop, Kalgoorlie, a midnight goldmine tour.
It's a shame it wasn't daytime, Kalgoorlie has so much more.
Now we're on the Nullarbor Plain and here's an interesting fact;
Australia boasts the world's longest, straightest railway track.
'Nullarbor' is an Aboriginal word which literally means- 'no trees'.
For nearly a thousand kilometres, low growing shrub is all one sees.
Much time is spent in the lounge car meeting fellow travellers.
Enjoying a couple of drinks and listening to the revellers.
The dinning car is nice and plushly appointed.
But if the carriage bumps, you could be anointed.
The meals were 'a la carte' with Gold Kangaroo Service.
First class all the way can't get any better than this.
Sleeping on a moving train can really be a trick.
Constant rocking all night long can leave one feeling sick.
But after a hearty breakfast you're ready to face the day.
And you stagger through the carriages to the trains bump and sway.
Turning south towards Adelaide we travel through a place named Woomera.
The British tested nukes here once, the name means- 'place of thunder'.
It wasn't named by local natives, the ones who named it were white.
And though I'm white even I can see, the British had no right.
But that was many decades ago and this land still lives.
A magnificent vista to the eyes it gives.
Travelling by rail is an experience to be had.
All in all, I have to say, it wasn't half bad.

Another proud aussie who so much enjoyed reading about your adventure. I'm from melbourne and hope to travel around the rest of Australia in the near future. A great write thanks so much for sharing.

| How beautiful you are in your write. I hope someday I can travel to your wonderful country. Its one of my dream trips on my list. I happen to think this country is just awesome. I never been there. I even think of living there. Somewhere inside me, I feel a kindred spirit with this country. I hope I can make the trip. Your write was so inspiring and nice to envision too.
