(Prelude to the) Death of a Guardsman

Contributed by ChibiMiroku on Friday, 4th November 2005 @ 11:07:47 PM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

The king asked of me a favor one day
He said he had a job for me;
Not too dangerous, but had great pay;
And for that, I gave up my right to be free.

I was to be bodyguard to the princess;
Bright, charming and fair was she
I thought t’would be an easy job, I confess
As the princess had not yet made a single enemy.

But I had forgotten her father was the King,
And that there were those who would stop at nothing
To force him to abjure the royal ring
So that they themselves could become king.

The aforesaid revelation came to me in a flash
As an assassin came at milady with a knife;
I dispatched the man with one quick slash,
But both milady and I knew she could have lost her life.

Through many adventures, milady and I
Figured out we couldn’t remain escort and escorted;
We needed to become friends of the very best kind;
And so we did.

Friends though we were, I kept in mind
Her station and mine, and that my first duty
Was to her safety and chastity
And to make sure she didn’t become another’s great find.

The first problems soon arose
When I was among the companions she chose
To journey with her and do much partying;
And so I was with her, though not just for the guarding.

Time passed, and we became even closer;
We sat the same bench, ate from the same platter;
Though most people didn’t care much about the first,
They quickly became uncomfortable about the latter.

During one of our journeys, we returned to the king;
Even as we together chose the beasts for the slaughter,
I couldn’t tell my best of all best friends: the words wouldn’t ring;
I couldn’t just tell him, “Sire, I’m in love with your daughter!”

How could I? I, the humble servant,
Only too glad to do his lord’s bidding;
One still fascinated by his own fancy raiment;
Why would you give a peasant a diamond ring?

I have made up my mind; my thoughts are clear;
No matter how I try, my heart still keeps fear;
But no matter; I’ve signed my post to one dear friend;
And as to my heart and my mind, they’ll soon find their end.

What we wish could never be; Society says we can’t be together.
Nobody will deem this idea even one bit clever,
But I don’t care; this mortal connection will I soon sever,
Because I know that my spirit will remain with her forever.

Boy you are so gifted and talented. This is absolutely sensational. It tells of a tragic love story that can only end in pain and sadness.
You always manage to keep your reader captivated and interested in finishing reading your poem from start to finish. That says alot my friend. Well done on producing a true masterpiece.
*hugs*
sue
