One Tough Letter

To Ms. John Doe,
Good day to you, my name is Col. Godfey Anderson, Battlation Commander. I regret to inform you that your husband Sgt. John Doe died while serving under my command.I'd like to take this time to send you my deepest regrets.
A soldier died today defending the country that he loved,
I now gather my men around and pray to the Lord above,
Lord we come to you in despair, we're fighting a war and are awfully scared,
Everyday a soldier dies, and everyday the emotions we hide,
He was a husband, father, brother and son, why do the good die young,
He never cared about medals on his chest,all he wanted was to put the world's demons to rest,
He fought with pride, bravery and honor, I know they had a little girl, I pray these words will calm her,
We ask that you bring healing upon the family that grives,guide and protect us as we fight to keep America free, Amen.

Hello my name is Ms. Jane Doe, first I'd like to thank you for your letter, I know it must be heartbreaking to have one of your men die, so I'd like to take this time to send my deepest regrets to you,
My husband was a brave and prideful man, he was never happier than when he was under your command,
He followed your orders to a tee, and he was happy to give his life to keep America free,
I know he's looking down upon us both, keeping you safe and me warm,
He is still with me just not in physical form,
I pray all of you make it home safe, I hate for any other wife to deal with this pain,
Thank you for your letter, he was all I had, please come home soon, I miss you dad.

| That letter has been rewritten many times in our history, and though it is tragic that these letters must be written, it would be more tragic still if we had know one willing to risk all in our fight for freedom. |

This is beautifully written by someone who knows the sadness and sorrow of losing a precious life. The horror of war gives way to the equally aweful horror of a wife who has lost her entire world.
The construction of the poem is well thought out and creates a tension between the battlefield and home.
May God bless our men and women in the armed services at home and abroad.
