I wonder what you’ve seen,
Like the winds of new and old,
The faces that laugh were hardened to fight
A war not their own.
And the Ivory Button knows of the cold,
It knows of the lies,
Too many it’s been told.
It’s been in the race,
Towards the end of the line,
Yet it has spoken no words,
And gotten along just fine.
It has walked a straight road,
Only to find it was skewed,
It has loved so many,
Yet kept so few.
It learned to be a watcher,
And that the world will turn on it’s own,
That some people will never change,
And that some things must be thrown
Away before they grow into something so much more,
Because as sweet as the dream may be,
It will always be one step ahead,
And one has to wonder what he is fighting for.
Covered in the filth of war,
The Ivory Button stands a sorry sight,
Shrouded with the blanket,
Of dreary dusk and night.
Will it ever see the light of day?
This, I wish for hopefully,
Though the world will never understand,
That this Ivory Button is me.
