As she sits in her room and cries,
She wonders why he’s not there.
Her father, her Daddy, her hero,
She sits there telling herself he cares.
He left when she was five,
She was Daddy’s little girl.
She told herself “He loves me’”
“I’m Daddy’s golden pearl.”
Visits got shorter,
And came after long periods of time.
She told herself “He’s busy,”
“My Daddy’s done no crime.
As she’s celebrating her 7th birthday,
He’s nowhere to be seen
Her sisters are saying he doesn’t care
She just tells them they’re mean
She’d cry herself to sleep
Her teddy’s she’d hold tight.
She told herself he’d come home soon
“It may be tomorrow he just might.”
By now she’s nine
Getting smarter by the day.
She asks herself “Why isn’t Daddy here?”
“Oh… that’s right… My daddy moved away.”
She’s now 13 nearly 14.
Now she’s telling herself “My Daddy don’t care.”
She asks herself why,
She answers with, “My Daddy’s never there.”
This young ladies’ all grown up,
Over her dad she won’t cry.
She’s wiser and stronger,
This little iron butterfly.
