The Soldier in the Grave.

Contributed by Deb24 on Thursday, 6th October 2005 @ 08:14:10 AM in AEST
Topic: Patriotic

As the breeze blows gently against a wind chime,
My mind drifts off back into time.
I read about a battle and how it took place,
I see a look of fear on a soldier's face.
This was a battle that was like no other.
The blue and the gray, brother against brother.
As the shots rang loudly and they'd start to fall,
Voices of the wounded in the distance would call.
In the deep of the night they'd hear whispers of the dead
And wait for the next day in which they would dread.
The bullets were flying all around
As one by one they'ed hit the ground.
They'ed carry their flag with dignity and pride,
But,the real battle was going on inside.
They didn't want to be there, they didn't want to fight,
For the depths of this battle would reach new height.
Day in and day out, battle sounds they'ed hear,
And watch their backs for their lives they would fear.
Now,history books speak of the facts about the brave,
But how many secrets lie with"The Soldier in the Grave"?

just to let you know i really liked this poem

there are so many questions about this war,
or any war for that matter ...

brother against brother ...

the senseless and horrific brutality
of the civil war ...

the whispers of the dead that may still be "alive" there

those things history books just merely gloss over

this poem could be expanded even more

well done

Few people realize just how tragic The War Between the States truly was. Brother against brother, father against son, the dearest of friends determined to kill each other.
