(Compassion Fatigue 101)
No more 2am calls,
For drunks injured in barroom brawls
Or crushed on the road, their faces smashed, all
Those promising futures dashed
No more opening arms to distraught sons,
Consoling grief after seeing their moms
Dead from stroke or heart attacks, cold
And lifeless on their backs
- I’m leaving the nightshift
I’m leaving it all behind, because
Its just my time,
Offering support when emotionally drained
Is not a feeling easily explained
Its not that I could ever stop caring
- Its just that I’m tired of sharing
All that grief and pain,
Revisiting tragedy, again and again
- I’m leaving the nightshift
I’ve dressed babies gathered from mother’s arms,
Cold and stiff in untimely death
Skirted the mental patient’s charms,
Been close enough to hear last breath
Seen stabbings, shootings, violent lives,
Children abused and laid to rest
Husbands beating up their wives,
People at their worst and best.
Like a beacon, the hospital draws
The dregs of life through its doors
Good people too, scarred by fate
But I think I’ve past my used by date
Best of luck to those remaining
For you perhaps its not so draining
The fire of passion is past just waning
I’m done with all of my explaining
I’m gone.

Excellent write spike! I feel like I was almost there with you. How
heartwrenching it must have been for you to be witness to all of
the sorrows you've written here. But you captured the emotions
perfectly. Well done.
*hugs*

Well written! No doubt it was a powerful and difficult experience every time, and some of that shines through in this piece.
Nicely done.

This is a very good write. To me the time you put in was nothing short of heroic. The write is that way too. Great job. |

The poem, SUPERB! The insight and reason so masterfully and demonstratively painted in a picture of humanity.
There's just so much sacrifice of psyche that can be allotted to heroism. Stay in the saddle of song, Spike, you're still servin' all with your words --- sometimes off the Nightshift. |
