When Death Comes

Contributed by SusieQ on Saturday, 18th January 2003 @ 07:00:00 AM in AEST
Topic: InternetLove

I just heard the news,
The sad news today,
That a friend I once knew
Has past away.
He seemed much too young
To be leaving this life,
But that dreaded disease
Struck him down like a knife.

I suppose, like us all,
He felt his life would be long,
Not taking death seriously,.....
Dreaming nought could go wrong.

When I'm well
And I'm going along just fine,
A sense of immortality on earth is mine.
I don't vision my own life ended next year;
Its my loved ones mortality
Thats dreaded with fear.
But whether they go...
Or whether its me,
Parting can come any minute,
You see?

A confidence of life is a joy to the soul,
But don't let fool-hardiness take its toll.
Go for the priority
That today holds for you.
Whom will you love?
What will you do?
Will you live this day with all of your might?
Will you be satisfied.....
If death comes tonight?

SusieQ Twice in the forties during my RAF service I faced sudden death (nothing heroic just approaching stationary landscape at high speed). A split second before impact Ithe brain switched off. As though I'd been watching telly in a darkened room and somebody switched it off. No pain nothing.
It was days before I came back and then very slowly. I remember seeing a corner of the window and trying with every fibre to make the picture grow. Gradually my senses returned (all except my sense of smell) But was I overjoyed and have treasured every moment of life ever since
The first words I heard from a Wren nurse were
"So you've come back to us........"
About seven years later I was comming downstairs (back home) Ah bacon I thought BACON !!!!!! I COULD SMELL BACON!!!!! and in that silly strange moment I realised how beautifull life was. I ran out into the garden to smell every flower I could find..

Great poem got it absolutely right..

Thank you, LOWMAN613, for reading and commenting on When Death Comes. This one was written several years ago. I've lost several more of my family and friends now. It is good to know there is a Heaven where they are at peace. My peace needs to come now in knowing that I am living this day well. TY

Dear Wrybod, I just discovered I hadn't thanked you for sharing your experience. I thought I had because I remembered what you said. I'm posting poems under the name, Bizzy, now. Thanks again. Bizzy (SusieQ)
