The Orphan

Contributed by Willofree on Monday, 19th September 2005 @ 05:05:42 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

It's mother killed by a car
Baby fawn abandoned and alone to starve
Wondering aimlessly about
Not sure how to survive, or make out

Sad, scared and lonely, it shivered with cold
Not knowing how to care for itself, only a few days old
A sad and panicked look on its face
Looking for shelter and its mother, just anyplace

It began to make pleading and pitiful sounds
Putting it at risk, by predators to be found
It shivered and shook with cold and hunger
About ready to stumble and fall into perpetual slumber

Eventually a hunter happened along
There with the help of his dog, the fawn was found
The hunter gathered up the little deer
And took it home to care for, and keep it near

Now the little fawn sleeps with the family dog at night
And he is bottle fed by the family all right
But a more permanent home is needed
However, the DNR has interceded

The families right to keep the animal
Is being challenged in a court battle
The out come is yet unknown
However, the family is holding their own

No frills needed for such an endearing (and true!) story. I am an animal lover, so I knew I would love this write anyway...lol but you wrote this well, with a good flow, and such heart-warming detail that leaves this particular reader wondering if this kind family may be the author's?

: )

Great poem...thanks for sharing this!

Scorp.

Just what will the DNR do to the animal, euthanize it? If the family is willing to care for and pay the keep of the animal, I cannot possibly see what the problem is. Eventually the family will have to release it back to the wild but it will take time. Better than killing it.

Excellent story.

If God sees every Sparrow that falls from a tree,
and clothes the Lillies of the field, who is man
to interfere with a mere human being showing
the same kind of compassion to one of God's creatures?
Very well written.
Rob
