The Only Way to Keep a Butterfly...

Contributed by overstated on Tuesday, 13th September 2005 @ 06:41:14 PM in AEST
Topic: goodbyepoetry

You fly in my skies, like a butterfly
You fly so high, I can’t understand why,
I want you in my life
But you always rise
And then leave
Like a butterfly fluttering on a leaf...

Have not fear,
For I will be right here:
Waiting in the sorbet reeds,
Where a cheek meets a tear
Where contact just disappears
Is where I’ll stay
Watching you fly... fly... away…

So cry me one last goodbye
And then leave me catching flies
Like a puddle eager for rain
Like a puppy born without a name
Give me one last chance to explain…

Dear Butterfly,
I’m going to release you, toward the distant sapphire sky
Its is not right to keep you here like prey
I have no call to make you live that way
The love we had has left and gone away
Maybe as you leave... your soul will somehow stay…
Because someone told me yesterday,
That the only way to keep a butterfly
Is to watch it fly away…

It's a lovely poem. Why did it take so long to write it?

theres more than one way to keep a butterfly

but even if you see the hatch

even when they only hatched from their cacoons
is because you saved them

even when you are the first to see the fly

they never stay

great poem. and it doesn't matter why it took so long to write it, as long as you put a lot of effort into it.

Yes, this is so true, sometimes the only way that we may truly hold on to love or anything in life is to let it go, and we in turn, may reflect on it the way we last remembered it to be, beautiful. In some cases, given time, it may return to you. This was a lovely write, keep it up

Kind of seems like it should be a song. I hear music when I read it. Good job.

I can see why it took you so long - you've tumble-dried so many metaphors and similes here that I don't know where to start.

Puppies? Puddles? Flies? Leaves? Wreeds?

The rhymes are all so forced, that the overall meaning, line-by-line is abstracted out of my conceptual reach.

Try it again, without rhyming.

That's not bad at all. I do see were N_P is coming at, I do see some forced rhyming which I am guilty of most of the time.

Although I thought this was good, I am curious though why it took so long to write?

AUTHOR NOTE:
To answer the common question - it took just under a year to write because I first had the initial concept of a butterfly when I was breaking up with someone a year ago, however I only fully understood what I was trying to say and how I wanted to say it recently. As I broke up when another girl or two or three. I rarely write about myself but this had to be put down to pen I make no bones about using metaphors etc because as with a personal poem, the metaphors relate to the situations I was in and the rhyming is how I wanted to say my messages. I personally feel it helped with the flow. I hope you enjoyed reading this piece in either case, and that you draw whatever meaning from it you want.

Thank you for all your comments

Rod

I think that this is a lovely goodbye/ farewell poem. It was brillantly written and some poems just need time to write. This is a masterpiece. It was really good..
