Summer Vagabond

Some kind of echo follows me these days
Trying to hold onto the last rays of sunlight
Still warm enough to swim in the ocean
Yet there is a taste of something tart in the air
As if old age wants to steal summer’s last blush
The sun does not fly as high as it did last month
I know these signs are the passing of carefree summer
Into deeper shades of importance
Before winter closes its icy gates to the north
I watched the ocean sparkle and shine
As we cruised the arm of Cape Cod down to Hyannis
Wanting to take it all in and keep it in my memory
Gray shingled mansions, sailboats and yachts
Celebrating a perfect end of summer day
Oh to follow the sun as it makes its way
Down under the Equator to its winter home
I would be a happy vagabond
