For My Mother

Contributed by Man_On_High on Friday, 9th September 2005 @ 12:39:22 AM in AEST
Topic: SadPoetry

Only in dying Mother
could I have offered you a poem.

So uncommonly quiet you laid in my grieving midst-
your flock of bereaved wild guests
pinioned by the pomp and paraphernalia
of death.. for once upon an only time;
beyond a raw useless grief of nine-
your friends.

Gathered in desperate amity around
your calm requiem hour..
and almost I saw you smile
in happy disbelief from the better side of death.

Only in dying lady could I have offered you a poem.

Never in life could I have captured that free live spirit of a girl
in the torn and tattered net of my words.
Your life was bruised.. a flower-
burning ash under mantle and memories;
the debris strong and sure of broken decades
under a hail of mind-twisting fate
and under blinding blows of enraged love..
trying always to wake in the sun of tomorrow.

You alone percieved life beyond its present pain,
BROUGHT FORTH a song in my skin
and sudden burst of defiant laughter
spilling over the nightly gloom of my awakenings.

..a firefly of far splendid light dancing in the dim catacombs of my brain..

Your quick step and quick eye for pain
has printed patterns of much joy
upon the bare walls of my life-
with your broad bold strokes of Irish wit..
flaming from the ruins of your every breath..

Love,

Billy

Powerful, beautiful, moving words.

I feel that, in a sense, this piece signifies something the death of a close family member might initiate - the person does not cease to be "mother", but in being physically removed from that position, is now seen, like a glint of sun on the water, to be sister as well, sibling of this life. I know not if I'm on track saying this, but such are my thoughts reading this.

(would we could see that, apart from all social and familial positions, we are all really siblings)

Well done, and may her memory never dim.

Andrew

Billy, this is a beautiful tribute to your Mom...She sounds like she was a strong and patient being, and she obviously influenced you greatly. I'm sure she was and is mighty, mighty proud of you. Sometimes it's hard for us to express our feelings to those closest to us, but you did in this write, and rest assured...it's not too late ; )
Great job Billy, keep it up.

Scorp.

I am so sorry for your loss. This was such an emotional poem it's made me teary eyed as i read your words.

Your grief and pain are reflected in your words. I couldn't say anything more really. I'm just so impressed on the way you wrote this.

Thanks for sharing it.

Hugs,
Jane!~

I wish you could have written it while she was alive. Given her the beloved flowers while she could smell them. Not all lives work that way and I grieve for her fate in life and what it bestowed to you. Parental love can sometimes be marred by life and the shortness of it. Blessings to you, Billy. She is with you always.

Billy,

my dear dear friend,...

simply a moving piece...I can really relate to the start when you are describing everyone gathering around your mother's coffin.
Unfortunately I have attended many funerals so I totally understand.....and sometimes only in death do we truly appreciate the ones we love and hold close..

Beautiful tribute, splendid words Billy.

I'm sure your mother would be proud..

Sorry for your loss( my heart cries for you)

*silenced by the sheer power of the words before her*

Dear, sweet Billy, what a truly amazing write and wonderful testament
to the remarkable, loving and caring man you genuinely are. I am so
sorry that you had to go through this kind of pain. It's never easy.
I hope that you have found peace. I'm sure where ever your mother
is, she is beaming!

luv and hugs,
~Breezy

I sing that song, where have all the flowers gone..
