I Am Thankful
Thanksgiving a day of great celebration,
For some a reminder of a murdering nation,
People talk of two races living in harmony,
It’s to bad natives didn’t own an armory,
History books tell of assistance through the winter,
They fail to recall “Thanksgiving” in a musket splinter,
What is to be thankful for is it the reservations,
Or maybe it’s for disease and starvation,
Thank you for “Manifest Destiny”,
From East to West genocide was the recipe,
Thank you for the United States Calvary,
Wounded Knee The Trail of Tears,
The grand attempt of slavery,
Thank you for Spanish conquest rape and pillage,
Thank you for destroying Montezuma’s village,
Thank you for “The Duke” John Wayne,
Hollywood’s portrayal of the west gone insane,
Thank you for erasing Native Language off the map,
Thank you for placing Jesus on our lap,
Thank you for the great Christopher Columbus,
His queen and the three ships that squashed all of us,
Thank your for tasty Alcohol,
The preferred method of Native down fall,
Thank you all the funny pet names,
“Wagon Burner” and “Tanto”,
They let us know were not the same,
Thank you for unfulfilled treaties,
The Great White Chief and Government Committees,
Thank you for 500 years of things like,
Degradation, segregation, strangulation,
Without reparation,
Just one question where’s our “Emancipation Proclamation”,
Thanksgiving Day an American Tradition,
It marks when Native ways were put into prison.
