I wish now, as I look behind
That I'd paid attention to the time.
That I'd sat and listened, still and fast
To stories told by ancestors past.
That lessons lived had become a guide
A timeless map to keep at my side.
Wisdom learned and passed down for ages
To guide me through life's myriad stages.
For as I walk through late spring's years
I find myself at times in tears.
That these epic tales were there to hear
Had I but listened to those held dear.
So it goes, that time moves on
And the fable's mine to tell,
I beseech you, Childe, this one thing.
Sit... and listen well.

A rich lesson learnt. With pain, alas, but we do so often learn only that way. I love your choice in words - you show skill therein that will only improve, methinkest. Well done!

I like how the words flow and don't get all jammed up like some poets do on their work. It is a very nice poem I like it |

Very nice! And... rather wonderfully reflective (though painfully so) of that fact that we often do not know what we have until it has slipped away from us.
I adored the ending. "... and listen well" just tugs at me. Ah, shouldn't we all... shouldn't we always? It irks me so that we get so distracted and sometimes forget to do so. *sigh*
Thanks for sharing this -

What? I can't hear you.... Just kidding. I'd thought I'd commented on this one, I'd read it twice.
Well done, my friend, well done.
Take care.

Exceptional. heart- wrenching. A cautionary tale that we sow what we reap. So many lives, so many stories - where did the habit of listening to the recountings of elders go?
A few years ago as part of an assignment I audio taped the life history of a friend's mother. it was an enriching and eye-opening experience that i will gift to her when her mother passes.

Dawn~
We often do not know what we have until it has gone.
Sometimes life gets the best of us and we are so inundated
with things to do that we totally forget what is important to
us until its too late. A hard lesson we learn in life.
A very touching write penned by a very dear and special poetess. Keep up the great work Dawn~
huge hugs,
dreamer
