Spectre

I asked him once, please hold my hand,
He looked at me and smiled -
Beneath his deep brown eyes, a heart,
With kindness undefiled.

The long brown hair about his face,
So handsome on that day -
I reached to it a timid touch
Before I pulled away.

My eyes chanced his then wandered off,
My cheeks a blooming red -
I felt his gaze reach through my face
To touch my soul instead.

My dormant heart leapt from my chest,
And shivers clutched my spine -
As I saw him lift his hand
And gently reach for mine…

That day beneath the autumn sky,
I thought I’d found true love -
Looking in those deep brown eyes,
That met mine from above.

I leaned in slowly for a kiss,
And felt his lips so near -
Begging him to speak the words
I thought I’d never hear…

But that was all some time ago,
A memory cold and dead -
It’s all a ghost that haunts my mind
And fills my heart with lead.

He was just another love
Who quickly bade ‘farewell’ -
Now the loss shall haunt my mind,
And break my heart, as well.

I just asked once, please hold my hand
To wake me from this dream -
Just as my lips kissed empty air,
Forever, it would seem.
