The only one

Contributed by jonteD on Tuesday, 14th January 2003 @ 05:00:00 PM in AEST
Topic: LovePoetry

Every second of every day, as love stories go,
Where the guy tells the girl he misses her so,
And a rivers tears he has shed since he went,
Sad is the moment, sad the day, sad lament.

But with him not around does she really care,
Is her heart aching with her man not there,
Have her pretty good looks taken the eye,
As she serves the drinks to every stationed GI.

He keeps her picture close as he flies the sky,
Last thing to look at should he painfully die,
If no escape from damaged Spitfire aflame,
His love he would stare at again and again.

His letters she keeps on a table beside the bed,
Pays scant attention, most unopened, unread,
Tonight, as with yesterday and again tomorrow,
She’ll take a new lover to soften any sorrow.

By the morning, as sun rises to spread daylight,
He will be flying over France to deadly dogfight,
And as his Spit spirals down from out of the sun,
The picture lies and says he was the only one.

jonteD. I flew Spits' a long time ago. Never saw it from the other point of view. I wonder where my little nurse is now. Thanks for bringing it all back so vividly

Oh wow..... This comment's way past it's expiration date..lol I just stumbled across this poem while roaming the site. I really like it, it's just an incredible work of art. The story's my favorite. Usually you hear stories like that and think the fairy tale type thoughts-- you know, that she'll always remember him, yadda yadda..... But this was different. Different is good =)

Great work, I really enjoyed reading this...
God bless,
Ellen
