The Toll of Reason

Contributed by Man_On_High on Friday, 12th August 2005 @ 01:25:38 AM in AEST
Topic: SadPoetry

Now descends the broad disenchantment
of our many far flung years..
the solitary re-enactment
of all we failed to do
but dreamed of most fervently;
things we only half knew
with perfect intensity
in some unvisited corner of our minds
that awoke when the spell broke
to fantastic star-sprung fears..
unabsolved by rite of years.

The brilliant and blind
visions that led on,
'till deciet itself was done
and our little dog-days won;
the comfortable delusions
willing..and believed-
the heartscalding confusions
tortuously concieved
unto a birth of gloomy mist and gleam
to the brittle morning beam,
showing up the stark
emptiness of all our dark.

The ageless battle of ideals,
fought across some quaint dinner table,
our useless eloquence unable
to break the thinnest ice-
echos of paradise..
forever coveted and uncaught;
the Arctic wilderness of thought
leading, howling on to nowhere,
with love encountered here and there.

Turning from equisite uncandid eyes
to some sorid comprimise..
the endless folly of growing wise-
hoarding jealousy to ourselves,
like volumes unopened on dusty shelves..
much knowledge and little faith
attaining Man's high estate..
some hollowed out version of we,
what once upon a wild time, used to be
before Reason took it's Toll
on our heavy hearts and heavy souls,
leaving only that, that delves
into our metaphysical hole.

..how casually we commit the murder of ourselves!

Yet see how little of wisdom we have learned?
..for while our several little Romes burned
and love itself was stranded and lost..
bitten by a bitter frost,
unassumingly, we continued to sing
of Love, the only lovely thing.

M.O.H.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant, although sad that it takes us so long to wake up to reality. "Much knowledge and little faith", oh yes, absolutely. Yet knowledgeable enough to "continued to sing of Love, the only lovely thing." Not just love of ourselves, but of others and life and spirituality. This truly is a brilliant write, Billy, for those that have come far enough to recognize the facts.

Well, now that is a poem!

This piece takes the reader in deep, yet does not lose them, and conveys its message with consummate skill. It does!

And a perfect buildup to the appropriately-emboldened exclamation

..how casually we commit the murder of ourselves!

Well done! You've struck a chord seldom attained, I feel.

Wow,

I got alot out of this write!!!! amazing and very thought provoking. I can relate and it is important to not lose your ideals and settle to a heavy and empty heart as well as to not be self rightous and judgmental so we dont have a Rome burning.... Remarkable write and again i feel like a student studying a work of art

Billy~
You never ever cease to amaze me. This is a brilliant write deep and powerful in meaning.
Not many poets possess such a unique talent in writing like you do Billy~ You bring your point across and you do it well.

Yet see how little of wisdom we have learned?

You are my mentor Billy~ I look up to and hope to one day be able to write outstanding poetry like you do. I'm a student learning from the very best. Thanks for sharing with us ur extraordinary work.
love, hugs n prayers from ur fan/friend,

whoa. Okay , to say this is distinctly profound would be the understatement of the
year! My God, Billy .. there is so much to take in here .. almost too much for one's heart to
hear. Hypocrites ... perhaps. But are we not also human and doomed to this flawless
existence? But that we are flawed, is not the cause for our suffering. It's in the senseless
need not to be. If we could only accept that we are going to be imperfect, it would
then become less of an importance, no? This write is filled with an almost bitterness
that we must endure any pain at all. But through our pain, do we not realize the
pleasure of being alive? For every yin there is a yang, I believe. And always, (and I will take
this one to my GRAVE), ALWAYS, a silver lining ..

The third stanza just seared through my soul. I read this aloud and as I reached that
particular verse .. tears began to well. I think I relate to that one, a little too much.

Exceptional work, dearest, as is always the case ..

xo
