X

Topic: oops

Marked by your pen
I lay distinguished, an X
Given an identity that I believe is not my own.
You have said that I fit here
Like a peg, in a child’s puzzle
A cork in a bottle of wine
Yet,
It seems I just might pop.

Lately it appears so important
That label, you have branded me with.
However,
I am not a cow, or a sheep
But that brand has been burned upon my flesh;
Singeing the thoughts of society.
I am livestock.
Moved and guided about,
Expected to graze when I am told
Beaten if I do not produce.

Neatly, folded and placed
Categorized, labeled, and tagged
Waiting for anyone, to see
That I am
Just like a towel,
For neither blue or green
But a towel
I can still dry you from water
And wipe the sweat from your head
A towel
Yet,
You pass by me

Equality, a simple word
But for the towel,
The livestock,
And the peg in child’s toy
I am the X
Human and distinguished by
You.

labels never do enough justice to what is being labelled.

I can relate to this. I was "branded" by someone as well and assigned an identity that is not at all like me. It *hurts* when that happens. You've said it very well here, but this has much more depth to it than what I was feeling. You're right about the simple words, but we don't all have the same definitions, unfortunately. Excellent write!
Blessings, J.
