MICK IS A VERY HONEST MAN!!!
Hi connie,
I can appreciate your concerns, so here is a rough breakdown for you on the site income and expenditure per month, One reason this has become more of a problem the last few year is due to many things, but primarily, the fact that internet advertising rates have dropped (a few years ago we got more per click/page view than we do now), one major advertiser (that paid up to $80.00/month) withdrew from the site due to lack of support from the members(not enough people clicking on their ads), the hiring of a php programer to check/fix security issues in the code to stop hackers (although i do most of the code work on the site, i am only an amateur and hackers always find new ways to try attack the site, this is a professional who checks all code and fixes "leaks") and the necessity to add another server to the site due to growth. The "goal" on the financials block is for 2-3 months prior, as I do not know all the advertising figures until I get payment, and most advertisers pay 30 days after the end of the month. As you know over the last few months we have had many server issues which have not helped at all.
Expenditure:
Web hosting (the 2 large dedicated servers with extra drives/ram): $598.00/month
Web host extra services: $0.00 to $150/ per month depending on if hackers get into the server, upgrades and bandwidth
professional php programer: $50 - $500/per month depending on security issues with the sites code.
Tech services (server programer): Currently free due to my circumstances(he is a good guy), but before was $60/hour.
My broadband connection: $ 98.00/month (I know this may be considered as not site related, but the site is the only reason I put broadband in over dialup, which was only $12/month)
Domain names: $15/month (these are only the "your-poetry and yourpoetry domains, I have other domains that as they now expire I will lose)
other $5.00 - $50 (phone calls to host (in the USA) etc)
Income:
Main advertiser: $100 - $200/month (this is the top of page ad, slidein, popup and one above poem [3 years ago this used to pay about double])
Other ads: $40- $50/month (this includes the clicks page, at 65cents/1000 page views we are currently getting about 3-5000 per month, these other advertisers only pay when we reach a certain amount in income, some as low as $5.00 up to $50, so some we only get payment once a year from)
Donations and premium memberships: $100 - $300/month (though this month could be a little better)
The link they talk about "webmasters earn more money" I have not realised that that one was still there, that particular ad agency has not paid me since Dec 2004, and I thought I had removed most of their code from the site, and will remove that link shortly, as they no longer reply to my emails asking for payment (it is about $440.00 that they currently owe the site). This also happens at times when testing/trying new ad agencies, some promise well but never deliver, which is why sometimes you see new ads apear on the site and then removed due to non payment.
To give an indication of the other sites I run, both Best-Days and Clickymail are paid to read email sites and bring in about $10.00 a month, specialurls has not been updated in many years, and its advertising helps and is included in figures for YPDC as its the same advertiser. all of these sites are on the same servers, but have little bandwidth use, and the two PTRE sites are for sale.
As for myself, I am on a parenting pension, which gives me $1600(AUD) per month for the 5 of us here and I do a little other work that maybe brings in $100/week on good weeks. I have also heard it said that i should have known what i was getting into with both the site and my marriage, and I had to hold my tongue and not say anything when i saw that, but will give you a bit of an idea.
When I started the site, I had a business (7 years ago), that ran well, and so I had plenty to cover costs, then I had to sell the business upon divorce (you know what they can be like) and I was left with enough luckily to purchase this house outright, and some spare to live on. Over the years the spare cash has dwindled to nothing. On my now wife, firstly, can we help who we fall in love with, i think not, but it was my decision to marry overseas, and my parents have helped as much they can on their pension. We were told by immigration and the agent that it would take no more than 8-10 weeks, typically 6 weeks. to date it is now almost 19 weeks and has cost myself and parents almost $23,000.00. I have no more funds and so am selling most of my personal belongings, including my vintage vinyl record collection I was saving for the children. My parents have also thrown in all their savings to help as well. If all had gone to plan, it would havenot cost what it has, but I guess my bad luck seems to hold out. They now tell us it could be up to another 3-4 months, at which i am now looking at taking out a mortage on my house to help continue to cover costs. Myself and the children love Amy dearly and she loves us the same, and we will stand by her, and if worst comes to worst, we will sell up everything here in Australia and move to be with her, I have told Amy this and although it is not the best outcome, she is just happy to know that if all else fails, we will still be together.
Your poem is basically reasonably easy to correct, basically divide figures by 1000. The clicks page each click pays up to $0.00065 per page view (unique IP/24 hours). its not much, but every little helps, there are others on the site itself that pay better, like the ads above the submit button on the poetry submit page (may not be visible to premium), it pays up to 3 cents per click (unique IP/24 hours), but this is a new advertiser that I am waiting to acure and see if they pay.
I know that the poetry site will rarely if ever make a profit, I do it because it is my only hobby, and it would never make me rich unless some big shot paid big money to buy the site. I have known this all along, but i would prefer to keep it going rather than to have to shut it down for months on end and then have to reset everything up again, but if it comes to it that is what i will have to do and i just hope the long term members understand.
Anyway, I hope this helps you understand a little.
Mick Puttock
I think it is a wonderful honor for all of us to know you Mick,
and a privilege for those who can help. And yes if you have to
shut down to be with your lady love, then so be it. Who wouldn't
understand that?
Please put ideas for all of us on the site so that we might
be able to help you so you don't have to shut the site down.
Perhaps we could help you run it from our homes etc.
I know I'd be willing to do that for as long as it takes
until you can come back., and take it back over again.
And I know there are plenty more at YPDC that would
help you do that also.
Warm love
consue

hello consue =], since i start school tomorrow i will see if some of my crafts will bring in some money, so that i might give more than 20 dollars. im hoping to give at least from 30-50.
i have some suggestions that might make things a bit better for the site, if mick sees it that way or not....
completely axe the games. i see no point in having them on the site at all. if anything they are a distraction and diversion to read/comment on poetry. there are thousands of game sites, there are games for devices hooked up to the t.v. we dont need the games here, and i think they just take up space.
i think that if a few of the trustworthy moderators were given more power to delete things that would also help. for instance in the forums, there are thousands of threads of really of no use to anyone. the requests in site suggestions have been met. the delete poems requests have been met, so they should be deleted. all suggestions that cannot be met or just take up space should be deleted. the forum threads ranging from page 4 on are complete deadweight basically, and should be deleted as such with keeping members posts as it is, and not be dropped. if all of these things were deleted, that would just clean up the site and forums a bit by freeing space and faster loading times.
deleting inactive members would be a good idea too. if they do nothing on the site, their account should be deleted so that someone else can take on that name, and to also downgrade the number of members here to those that actually have at least posted one poem or comment and have visited the site in the last 6 months- 1 year. i think the members that only have a journal here should be deleted, because there are other places to have a journal. in all of these cases there can be notifications sent by email to these people or not, as i see it, they dont really care about the site anyway, and no reason to take time for them.
deleting the sections of recipes and jokes will simply put more emphasis on poetry, and free up space and make loading times faster. there can be forum threads devoted to these things, or there can be more poetry categories put in place to post them on the homepage....for as always there are places devoted to recipes and for jokes anyway.
anyway, im done with this essay =] |

*Trust* always was and is ever the issue. Some of us trust more easily than others. I can't say finances have ever been my issue here. I hope things improve after this, but it was good of you to post this. All the best, J. |

Sorry, but I never doubted him. I will still continue to help as much as I can financially as long as the site it online, which I hope is a very long time. God bless you and yours, Mick, and I hope all this immigration red tape stuff if ended soon and you will all be together.

will this disappear again my attorney wants to know as he watches me type. All I said was that I have my opinion and the above idea was great. If I could have an inactive account I'd turn it into a premium membership IF I COULD LOG ON WITHOUT HAVING TO CLICK ON AN ADVERTISMENT ..
WHEN WE HAVE TO CLICK ON AN ADVERTISMENT BEFORE WE CAN LOG ON .. THAT KIND OF TAKES OUR CHOICE AWAY ... CONSUE KEEPS ASKING ME WHY MY COMMENTS IS DISAPPEARING MICK ... WHAT SHOULD I TELL HER .. OR DO YOU WANT TO TELL HER .. AND AS FOR YOU BEING HONEST .. THIS IS HELPING ME MAKE UP MY MIND .. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME I'VE HAD TO POST THIS COMMENT .. AND MY ATTORNEY IS WATCHING ME TYPE .. .. I'M TIRED, .... REALLY TIRED. |
