How you stamped in the snow.

Contributed by EndEformEtrancE on Sunday, 12th January 2003 @ 07:03:04 AM in AEST
Topic: LostLove

The snow fell today and where were you?
Were you still sleeping soundly in your/our bed?
(Used to be ours but I shan’t sleep in it again)
Were you lying in the bed staring at the cracks in the ceilings and walls?
Underneath drawings we did when we were so very happy.
Perhaps your eye focused for a minute,
On the one I said was representational of my feelings for you.
Or perhaps just for a second.
Or perhaps not at all.

When the snow fell today, where were you?
Were you enjoying a nice long cigarette, gazing out across the lawn?
At that infernal car park and the bike cages.
Tell me, does the couple in blue still ride a tandem?
Or have they resorted to the unthinkable: a bicycle each?

The snow is falling today, and where are you?
Are you walking along the river,
Searching for something meaningful in the patterns made in the water,
As the crystals fall in and become liquid,
Melt into nothing,
And become nothing,
Out of site and out of mind,
Inferior and invisible,
Simply disappearing,
Disintegrating,
As the molecules relax and the bonds break down,
And parts of the snowflake become detached from others,
Drifting downstream,
Drifting apart?

The snow fell today, and where were you?
Tell me, were you running your hand along the railings,
Stamping in the stuff,
Jumping with your feet together,
Pulverising the white underfoot,
Until it’s little but a gruesome grey,
An icy slush,
A substance that resembles half masticated food in texture,
A revolting paste, mixed with dog ***** and January sales vomit,
Crushed underneath your hard-soled boots?
Were you grinning gleefully at your devastation,
Thinking how simple it is to destroy something beautiful?

Well let me tell you something:
Snow fell today.
And you weren’t there.
Snow settled today.
And you weren’t there.
Snow has been falling since Saturday the 28th of September 2002,
At approximately 4:35pm.

But today.
Today the snow settled.
