Medical professionals now work alongside state and federal agents in an effort to protect Americans from themselves and others. Today a doctor may have you committed to the mental ward of a hospital simply because that doctors says they have reason to believe that you are a threat to yourself or others. The doctor never has to prove that you were indeed a threat, only that they believed that you were.
What this means is that police unable to confine an individual may simply transport that individual to hospital for medical evaluation. If that individual then struggles or makes any threat whatsoever in response to the actions of those restraining or treating them they can be held by doctors on the mental ward. Our hospitals have now become temporary holding facilities for citizens not guilty of a crime but considered a threat.
I don’t know about you but this frightens me. Our hospitals have become an extension of the criminal justice system? Since when did doctors become judge, jury, and executioner? Also, what if that person taking in actually is a threat? I mean, aren’t detainment facilities located where they are for a reason, and aren’t we just placing the sick in danger by housing them at hospitals?
This deviance must stop. We have allowed the irrational fears of a privileged few to endanger our lives and restrict our freedoms for too long. It is time to take a stand and to hold government officials accountable for their actions when those actions wrong the citizens of this nation. I simply does not matter what those officials intent was when acting on the matter, only that harm was the outcome.

I must say I agree with this, but... it's not poetry. It's an essay. I think it would fit better under the prose category... |
