Harmless Moon

You prefer to view the waning moon
as glory. This is not an accusation.
To you,
the round wholeness of the full
is petrifying, and menacingly circular,
like the face of beauty or the paper plate of death.
It is not as if a crescent could not harm you;
prick your fingers, maybe, but it can’t
roll your mind
and
flatten it to death. Yet,
your eye craves
full moons. Secretly it plots against you,
betraying your voice by drifting in night's sky,
seeking comfort in the intimacy of webbed constellations,
the possibilities infinite,
each one leading to the moon.
