My calluses like to scars run down the
Whole of me, all who I have so become
In your cleverest grip my heart benumb.
And these senseless thickenings only a
Docile concern arouse, the feeling of
Wake-less fall, while the ground desiring,
It to its self an end aspiring,
Such a descension; the feeling of love.
So why, dark sublunary Love on low,
Cast down by the Hand of beauty greater,
Into that rebellious right of traitor
Beelzebub, do you our hearts plague so?
But to drag us to depths apart from Grace
That has long been too far for downcast eyes
Of this world to see? So all blood-full sighs
Move not a tear from her cold, lovely face.
A pox upon you demon of sackcloth
And ash! You offer but opiate hope,
Whose potency wanes and senses berope
With addiction’s increase! The Lord’s swath
I now pray solemnly to collect me,
And how sad, how dark my prayers have become.
So if women do so my soul benumb,
The Devil you are of inconstancie.
