Highway stretches on like a ribbon
Flowing over hill and dell
Past lonely farm homes
Old settlers do dwell
Rich black dirt
fields expanding to the horizen
Old barns
sturdy wood
stone bottom
settled deep where years it's stood
It is so very silent here
on the plain
Things seem to have gone to sleep
except for the wind
that constantly screams
Not enough trees to calm her
and block her travels east.

Never been to Iowa, but those winds are familiar, and I loved how you wrote this one, especially the last stanza.

This reminds me of a couple road trips I've taken myself...Each place truly does leave a little...I enjoyed this write, and I think the ending is great : )

Good morning, Lady Laura. I used to travel a lot before I retired and I agree that a little piece of each place and the people go with you in your mind and memories and heart. In addition to the home schooling you children are getting, they are also getting an education in people and places and knowledge of their country. They should be well-rounded people with a sense of adventure in them. I quite like my settled life now, but would not trade my travels for anything. May the spirits guide you along the road. Hugs, Rita |
