speak

Contributed by nobrainer on Friday, 15th July 2005 @ 11:12:55 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

My hands feel weak,
My mouth is dry I’m scared to speak.
My body’s quaking,
My knees are shaking.
I look from behind the curtain, the crowd is waiting,
Just for me to make a mistake,
I can already envision all the faults I’m about to make.
Then I hear them call my name,
I see another girl move; maybe by chance our names are the same.
Then someone from behind is pushing me on stage,
Grabbing my speech, I panic “… What if I forgot a page??”
Walking to the podium my feet feel like lead.
The watching me, looking very much like lions waiting to be fed.
Focusing on the clock in the back I remind myself to breathe,
Wishing with all my being, that I could just run and leave.
But instead I unfold my speech, my hands still shaking and weak,
Clear my throat and begin to speak…

Reminds me of that god awful feeling in my gut that turns to bile as one struggles to press on regardless of the waves that threaten to crush our very beings. Okay so I'm a little dramatic. I loved the poem anyway.
