I woke up one fervid summer day,
to water the plants,
to give the horse some old hay,
to meet the Master’s grants,
to milk the cow,
to continue life in my dreadful vow
It was when I came to the timber did I hear,
“One of dominance,”
in a cracking cheer
“I must query why you see the Master as prominence,”
When I twirled I saw,
a mangy cur
I yelled, “Of course his name…Now off, you barefaced flaw!”
As I gathered firewood,
he did not leave
I glared, but there he stood
So I asked, “What is it here that you must achieve?”
The mongrel licked his lips,
and so vigorously he replied,
“Would you own a few meat strips?”
The mutt I then eyed,
before saying, “Nil,”
He asked, “No futile bone?”
I growled, “I have but nil, and the cold is coming so I must go before I become ill,”
With those final words I stalked back home
The cur followed
I turned to exclaim, “Be off!”
He, skin and bones, swallowed,
and in attempt to look faint, he would cough
Before long he barked,
“If I were to name you, would I get my scraps?”
Laughing, I remarked,
“Stop, before I die of laughter and this wood does collapse,”
Like a pup, he cocked his head
“No,” he corrected
“Please, don’t leave me dead…I’d rather not to be rejected,”
“Like all!” and I grinned
“But,” the dog said, “I have a name for you!”
Once I stopped, I listened to the scowling wind
I whispered, “Tell me…I am who?”
He sat loyaly beside me,
before answering, “Master,”
I pondered, then laughed, “Then Master I shall be!”
But I hoped as we went, this would not end up to but a disaster
